[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]The MOTHER-POTAS was the guardian of the desert to these people. She was an abnormally large HIPPOWDON said to slumber beneath the dunes. The small colony here had been built around a shrine dedicated in her honour. It was a statue carved from white marble, surrounded by a fountain oasis.[break][break]

BRANDON FLOWERS, a ranger who had survived the DAWN OF THE DARKEST DAY, called this desert colony home. He had volunteered himself here to look after it, and protect the shrine from would-be thieves who wanted to harvest the marble there. The injuries he had sustained during that terrible event had left him in a weaker state than before, however. He needed help, for the thieves would regroup soon and attempt another daring heist.[break][break]

Under the VALOR INITIATIVE, rangers Audric Black and luka chêne have been assigned together once more to aid in helping Brandon. After a brief trek off ROUTE 111, the pair enter the settlement's main plaza to meet him there. Audric and his CUFANT stop at the edge of the shrine to admire its brilliance in the sunlight. The latter toots his trunk in awe.[break][break]

"Wow... you think the legends are true, Luka? That we're standing on the back of a giant Hippowdon right now? Maybe it's DYNAMAX..." He suggests, placing hands on his hips.[break][break]

Admittedly, Luka doesn't know that much about the more obscure legends and myths around Hoenn. It's Kalosian and Sinnohian folklore that she's most familiar with. But of course, she's more than happy to learn! And on their walk towards Route 111, Audric Black had been just as willing to fill her in.[break][break]

She's happy to have been partnered with him again. He seems nice, and the two of them had worked together well last time during the Verdanturf fire. And this time, their assignment is far less dangerous! She's thoroughly enjoying their walk under the sun, their easy chatter, the spectacular sight of the shrine around them.[break][break]

Audric's Cufant toots his horn, and her cotton-candy Ponyta brays cheerfully in response. For a moment, it's just a truly charming scene.[break][break]

"Ehh...I don't know! Maybe! I mean, it sounds really cool," Luka muses, eyes bright as she stares up at the shrine. "Except I don't...mn. Dynamax? What's that?"[break][break]

Is it related to infinity energy? Although honestly, Luka doesn't know much about that either. A biologist like Audric is far more likely to know about this kind of thing than she is. Unfortunately, they don't have much time to chat before Brandon Flowers appears on the shrine path ahead of them, walking with a noticeable limp.[break][break]

"Oh gosh...w-wait there, Monsieur!" Luka calls out. "We'll come to you!"[break][break]

She throws a crooked smile in Audric's direction and quickens her pace, her Ponyta trotting swiftly beside her. "Come on! You can tell me alllll about that Dynamax thingy later!"

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]The science colony back in HOLON were as fascinated with DYNAMAX Pokémon as any Galarian or Hoennian scientist would be. The phenomenon had made waves in the scientific community for years, though Audric wasn't exactly surprised Luka didn't know much about it either. On some level, it seemed the government in GALAR had taken measures to downplay the existence of that phenomenon altogether. It certainly took some digging for any civilian to know more about it, beyond just its name.[break][break]

Just as he begins to grow bright-eyed with the prospect of explaining it all to her, however, the veteran ranger they have come to meet shows himself. He chuckles in response and nods, following along behind her with the Cufant in tow. "Sounds good to me! Mister Flowers! We're the rangers that the Valor Initiative sent over to help you! My name is Audric Black and this is luka chêne, sir." Chen-ay. He still wasn't sure he was pronouncing her last name right, and casts a gauging glance at her to see.[break][break]

"Ah, yes... nice to meet you both." The man handsomely smiles, reaching out to shake their hands in greeting. "Brandon Flowers, at your service. Or, well... I'll suppose you'll be at my mine today, considering this bad knee. It's all a bit embarrassing, I won't lie." He chuckles, reaching down to rub the aforementioned bad knee. "You've been filled in about the bandits, I trust?"[break][break]

Audric nods. "The report said you think they might strike again tonight... and that you might benefit from some medical attention, too?" He looks over to Luka, abashedly rubbing the back of his neck. "Only I didn't bring any medical equipment... or healer Pokémon."[break][break]

It's more like shen, actually, but Luka's too meek to correct Audric on pronunciation. She merely smiles back and gives a little shrug, a subtle 'better luck next time', perhaps.[break][break]

There's a flounce to her step as she walks, pink hair glinting gold under the afternoon sun. Her uniform skirt swishes against her thighs as well, and perhaps that's the reason for the bounce in her stride. She can't help being excited...it's her first time wearing it out on a mission![break][break]

"It's nice to meet you too, Monsieur! The handshake is met with one of her own, prim and smoothly professional. Luka's face has settled into it's natural, contented air, though a storm cloud seems to pass over it when Flowers mentions his injury.[break][break]

"No, um...there's no reason to be embarrassed! You were there...o-on that day, right? It was so horrible...it's an honorable thing you did, being there. Please don't feel bad about it," Luka insists with an emphatic shake of her head. "I'm just glad we can help you out, truly!"[break][break]

She steps back with a sheepish smile, worried that she might be laying it on too thickly. Even though she's working with some of the top ranger members (like annalise henderson) to promote the organization, she's still just a cadet herself. A greenhorn. She doesn't want it to appear too overeager or annoying in front of an elite ranger![break][break]

"Just let us know what you need from us! We'll keep this place, um...super fortified, Monsieur!" The apples of her cheeks stretch wide in a grin, with an enthusiastic thumbs-up to match. Overeager, indeed.

Nevertheless, he still feels guilty for having had the ranger corps send them here. They were just kids, after all. At least comparatively speaking. And this?[break][break]

This was his burden to bear.

Despite the stubbornness and pride within him that yearned to send them away, however, the veteran ranger knew he wouldn't be of much use with his bum knee. So, accepting Luka's offer and regarding Audric's last statement, he reluctantly nods. "Well, I haven't received any sort of treatment or therapy for this knee since I left the hospital at Mossdeep... I'd be much obliged if any of you could do something for it. The medication I'm taking only helps so much, you see..." He adds with a hoarse chuckle.[break][break]

Audric frowns. "Of course, sir. Here, let's sit," He says, gesturing towards a stone bench placed against the khaki-colored wall of a domed dwelling.[break][break]

Brandon follows the gesture and carefully takes a seat, wincing with slight pain when he bends his knee to do so. There's a sharp exhale, followed by a deep breath as he looks up to the sky. "The sun is setting... I reckon they'll be here soon."[break][break]

Dropping to one knee and helping Brandon roll his pant leg up, Audric assesses the man's knee before turning to his partner. "You don't happen to have any healer Pokémon, do you Luka?"[break][break]

"Eh? You haven't? You should absolutely be seeing a therapist, Monsieur," Luka scolds lightly. "Your health is important! Especially since—" She cuts herself off before she can finish the thought: since you're getting older.[break][break]

"— since you're a ranger! There are a lot of people counting on you, I'm sure.[break][break]

She follows Brandon and Audric to the bench, hovering around them with concern laced clearly through her features. Although she can fix up a cut or scrape without issue, deep tissue injuries are another matter entirely. Luka doesn't have the foggiest idea how one might go around healing something like this, but luckily healing moves don't seem to have any specific parameters.[break][break]

"My Hatterene is a pretty good healer," she affirms, though there's a twinge of doubt in her voice. She isn't quite sure how well this might work on humans, especially on a long-term injury like this one. "So we'll do our best!"[break][break]

Carefully, Luka selects one of the love balls on her belt and tosses it with a slight flourish. From the ball bursts her Hatterene, accompanied by a shower of blue and pink bubbles. Even now, she's all about aesthetics.[break][break]

Luka kneels down and inspects Brandon's knee herself, not that it gives her any further insight. "Use life dew, please," she requests, pointing down at the elite ranger's leg. Parfait squints at the injury, then chimes once and hovers her clawed appendage over it. A stream of cool water bursts forth and drenches Brandon's leg as Luka stares at him, searching his face for any sign of relief.

I'm fortunate to have the both of you here today. Mighty thankful for it, too. The people here don't have much in the way of a protector— we're too far out from the big cities to receive any. I do what I can, but... I'm beginning to think they don't hold too much faith in my bum knee, haha."[break][break]

"You shouldn't be doing this alone..." Audric remarks as Luka summons a HATTERENE. "We should go scout ahead for the bandits while Luka makes sure you're okay. Only..." He looks around, acknowledging each stone-paved street that surrounded. "Any idea where I should start?"[break][break]

"Try Mattie's Tavern about a two-minute walk down Calabasa Street," Ranger Flower answers, gesturing with a nod towards the street in question, moments before he's given a soothing dose of LIFE DEW. "Tell Mattie I sent you."[break][break]

Audric nods, then turns to look at Luka before beginning to leave. "Catch up with me in a bit, yeah? I'll see you there." He smiles, his Cufant offering a cute little toot goodbye as they depart.[break][break]

Ranger Flowers, in the meantime, attempts to move his knee after the healing move has been administered. "Oh, yes... that feels much better. Absolutely worth the wet pant leg." He chuckles. When he attempts to stand up again, however, he winces for the slightest of moments. Hoping the young pink-haired lady hadn't seen it, however, he tries to change the subject.[break][break]

"Let's get going. Maybe we can still catch up with your partner there."[break][break]

"Are you sure you'll be okay on your own?" Luka's brow furrows in concern when Audric stands. He's more than proven himself as capable when they'd dealt with that fire together— more so than her, no doubt. Still, it's in her nature to worry.[break][break]

"Here, wait! Take Jam with you," she says quickly. "And be careful!" With a flick of the wrist she releases her Poipole, the ultra beast chittering excitedly and flying loops around her head. They might be flighty, and a bit of a prankster, but they're a good fighter. And perhaps their mystical presence might help to ward off troublemakers.[break][break]

Or it could attract them. Luka rarely thinks these things through.[break][break]

But Jam follows after Audric agreeably enough. Sure, they might try to pester and tease the man during their walk to the tavern, but at least he won't be bored![break][break]

Several minutes later, Parfait has finished working her magic on Flowers' leg. Luka watches him test his weight, but her eyes are on his leg and she doesn't notice the wince. Even so, she's a bit wary about them traveling so far despite the healing.[break][break]

"Mmm! Okay, but let's take it easy. Do you have a Pokemon you could ride? Might make the trip a little faster, so we can catch up to Monsieur Blackbell quicker." A helpful suggestion, and a way to keep his weight off his leg. Not a bad plan, if she thinks so herself![break][break]

One way or another, the pair manages to reach the tavern after Audric has already arrived. Luka keeps an eye out for the ranger and her Poipole, hoping that he's secured some good information in their absence.

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]Brandon had never seen an ULTRA BEAST this closely. He looks in awe when the POIPOLE emerges from its ball, then watches as it leaves to chase after Audric.[break][break]

Minutes later, after the LIFE DEW has been applied generously and he's had a moment to bend his ligament a bit, the veteran ranger pulls out his own ball and summons an impressive MUDSDALE. Swiftly mounting it, he reaches down with outstretched hand at Luka. "Need a ride, little lady?" He grins.[break][break]

Meanwhile, at the tavern, a brawl has erupted. Everything seemed to be normal when Audric walked in. It was only thanks to the investigative efforts of Luka's Poipole, however, that they came to realize the tavern owner was actually being held hostage. The entire place was under seige![break][break]

Several MANKEY cause chaos on its main floor. They bounce of walls, hang from ceiling fans, split wooden tables in two, and cast wooden chairs at Audric Black and his Cufant. Jam, too, zips around in the air as he is chased by one of the bandit apes. The actual bandits, in the meantime, pillage alcohol from behind the bar and go room-to-room in search of other valuables.[break][break]

Some backup would be nice around now!

Luka grins. "Well gosh, Mister!" she drawls, swapping out her natural Kalosian accent for something more Driftveillian, "Don't mind if I do!"[break][break]

It's a pleasant ride to the tavern. Luka sits behind Flowers on his Mudsdale while her Ponyta trots alongside them, careful to balance well so she doesn't have to throw her arms around his waist. But that peace ends as soon as they approach the tavern and hear the sounds of a commotion inside.[break][break]

Luka hops off the Mudsdale first, though the horse is far too big for her and she ends up mostly falling instead. She winces but scrambles to her feet just as fast, and offers a hand up to Brandon who refuses out of pride. "I should've been the one helping you down, not the other way 'round," he jokes as he dismounts, taking her offered hand with an abashed nod of thanks.[break][break]

This time, Luka notices his grimace when he puts weight on the knee. She's glad Parfait is on standby, because there's no time to tell him to take it easy![break][break]

The pair burst into the tavern and for a moment, Luka just stands there, gawking at the chaos. Jam notices her and, cackling like mad, the little Poipole zooms over to her side. It's clear that they're thriving on the mayhem.[break][break]

"Ummm..." Against human assailants she has few weapons. Luka simply can't stomach the thought of hurting another person. But the pokemon...well, that she can handle![break][break]

"Plum!" That's right, she's using yet another 'mon. It's like a PC showcase tonight! But her Musharna is her oldest companion, and knows exactly what the plan is when she's summoned. "Use hypnosis!"[break][break]

A ringing drone echoes around the little tavern. To all those it's targeted against, it sounds like the most soothing of lullabies. Soon enough, some of the cacophony dulls as Mankey start to nod off, and a sleepy lull hangs over the entire establishment.[break][break]

Of course, Luka only intends on putting the rampaging Mankey to sleep. But if it works on the bandits as well, she certainly won't be complaining!

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]The HYPNOSIS that spreads throughout the tavern does well to put the raging Mankey to sleep. Audric and his Cufant, however, are forced to take cover behind the bar to avoid its effect. Unfortunately, a few of the bandits there had the same idea.[break][break]

Just as one tries to scramble towards Audric for a punch, however, LUCY the Cufant intercepts and tackles said bandit across the room until he hits a wall (IRON HEAD). The bag the man had been carrying spills its contents all over the floor: cutlery, bottles of liquor, and packaged foods. When it's over, Audric and his partner Pokémon reemerge.[break][break]

"Awesome work, Luka..."

All of the bandits left had either been incapacitated or put to sleep. The back door left ajar, however, made it clear that a few had escaped to see another day. Audric strides towards Luka and Brandon, stepping over and briefly acknowledging the packaged food that had spilled out from the bandit's bag. "They're stealing food? Are things... this bad, for these bandits?" He asks.[break][break]

Ranger Flowers nods, setting hands on his hips as the bodies strewn out across the tavern floor snore. "This group mostly consists of former miners. But when the mines stopped yielding resources, they decided to become outcasts rather than anything else. This is the only way they know how to put food on their tables, I'm afraid." The man sighs as he pulls out a wheel of rope that was clipped to the back of his belt.[break][break]

The fight seems over before it's really begun.[break][break]

Luka should be grateful, as conflict avoidant as she is. Still, it's a shame some of the bandits got away. "Eh? No...I barely did anything," she replies, brushing off Audric's compliment with an embarrassed flush. "You and your Cufant were way cooler!"[break][break]

Jam seems to agree. Or at least, the ultra beast throws a plate against the wall and giggles happily. That feels like agreement. Luka flushes deeper and quickly recalls her little beast before they can do any more damage.[break][break]

While she fusses, she almost misses Audric and Flowers talking. But she catches the important bits, and her heart breaks a little.[break][break]

"That's...so sad." Feelings of animosity change to pity on a dime. Luka purses her lips as she stares down at some of the incapacitated bandits, then glances back up at Ranger Flowers.[break][break]

"I think...this is the kind of problem you have to cut out right at the source. And, um...w-well, battling isn't really my thing. But, um! Actually, I'm trying to focus on working PR for the rangers. So I might have a little bit of pull...ah, I mean! W-what I'm saying is, um..." Nervous laughter floats into the rafter beams, and she pauses a moment to breathe.[break][break]

"What if we tried to start an outreach program in the area to help them? I know Rangers are here to help pokemon, but if we don't help people too then they'll turn to Rocket instead. We can still help you protect the shrine in the meantime, but in the long run I think it could help. And then you can focus on making that leg feel better!"[break][break]

She smiles, feeling a bit more sure of herself. "What do you think?"

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]Audric grins at the sight of Luka's blushing, and playfully waves off her own compliment towards him before they regroup with Brandon.[break][break]

Some fair points are made on Luka's part afterward. Audric spares a moment to reach out and carefully pet the... weird alien thing Luka sent to help him. Afterward, however, he expresses his agreement with a series of nods and hums. "Yes, I think that's a great idea. Maybe that's something we can bring up with the Valor Initiative, actually." He suggests, watching as Brandon ties up each bandit with zip ties. The rope, in the meantime, is used to corral all the Mankey for the time being.[break][break]

Brandon hums in a way that denotes skepticism in the idea. "I'm afraid it's not all that cut and dry. We've tried asking for help from the League before, and they simply haven't been able to spare the resources since we're so far out. Rather than abandon the settlement altogether, we've worked day and night to make a living here instead... and I'm afraid the miners are just as stubborn as well."[break][break]

Finished with his work, he claps the dust off his hands and turns to regard both of his juniors. "But by all means: I encourage you to try. Now go on and get. I'll have some of the townsfolk help me transport these fellas to their cells." He insists, patting both of their shoulders at the same time. "Thank you kindly, Luka. Audric." He nods, sending them off to submit their reports.[break][break]
